Genocide Prevention Convention Development Day 2015

Assignment #3
Genocide Prevention Convention Development Day 2015

Objective:
1)   Demonstrate understanding of class discussions and inquiry-learning materials by creating an amended version to the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide – one that is comprehensive of all people groups and is relevant in the 21st century. This Convention will be submitted to the UN Office of the Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide.
2)   Demonstrate skills of analysis and questioning by presenting and justifying amendments to or additions of 10 articles that emphasize the prevention of factors/characteristics of genocide.
3)   Work collaboratively with your classmates.

Assignment:
1)   As a class, you will have 65 minutes to draft and present your articles.
2)   This will be a public event. We will invite other students, staff, parents, local community members, and local media. Therefore, you are expected to dress and act professionally. The room will be organized as a boardroom, so dress accordingly.
3)   This is a student-led activity, so how you organize yourselves is up to the class. However, it is recommended that you:
a.     Divide into groups of three. Assign each group an article number. Appoint a group messenger.
b.     As a group, decide what you would like your article to focus on. Have your group messenger report to the other messengers to communicate the theme of your article.
                                               i.     This is NOT a competition between groups. If two groups propose the same article theme, compromise. The Convention will be submitted as a class, so it is in your best interest to work together.
c.      Every article should be accompanied by a real-world example, either from the teacher-provided resources on the Class Blog, or from your own research.
d.     After you have drafted your article, ask another group (or two or three) to read and edit your article. As other groups finish their articles, start putting them together in order.
e.     The language in your Convention should mirror that of the original 1948 Convention, including a preamble. Remember, be precise and articulate with your word choices.

4)   In the last 15 minutes, the class will present their convention to the guests. This will be followed by a question period, where guests may offer revisions and suggestions.
5)   The class will have one week to complete revisions and edits. It will then be submitted to the UN Office of the Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide (http://www.un.org/en/preventgenocide/adviser/contactform.asp?address=1).
